Data Gathering Tools
Embracing the principle of data-driven decision making, the Math & Science Collaborative makes available to school districts a number of tools for data gathering. For a checklist of data gathered by the Math & Science Collaborative/Math Science Partnership, plus directions and spreadsheets, go to the AIU's MSP Data Collection & Evaluation page.
District Profile
The Profile of Math and Science Indicators evaluates successful course completion information (i.e. % of students successfully completing courses by graduation, as defined by receiving a passing grade) in math and science courses taken in grades 8 through 12, in particular, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra 2, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. These courses are basic prerequisites for further math and science study, and if not successfully completed, in the middle/junior or very early high school tenure, preclude a student’s ability to engage in any advanced study in math or science. The Profile of Math and Science Indicators is useful in examining both the regional status of math and science education, as well as exploring individual district information relative to the regional findings.
Educator Spreadsheet
One goal of the Math Science Partnership is to increase the quantiy, quality and diversity of the teacher workforce. Therefore, the National Science Foundation and the PA Department of Education require that we report disaggregated, school-specific data about all math and science teachers in each of the districts that are participating in the Math Science Partnership. This data is required on an annual basis.
District Development Matrix
Change is not an easy process. Various factors impact a school district, resulting in the need to engage in a plan for change. The District Development Matrix delineates the stages that a district should progress through in instituting standards-based curricula and research-based materials. Movement in the matrix begins in the upper left section and ends in the lower right section. Districts will find the tool useful as a guide in developing a plan for change in the mathematics and science curricular areas.
